Because of His Reverence

In Chapter 5 of the book of Hebrews, the writer is comparing earthly high priests with Jesus Christ. It’s almost silly how infinitely more capable and worthy Jesus is to offer a sacrifice for sins than the high priests are. The high priest had to first make a sacrifice for his own sin before he could offer a sacrifice for the sin of the people. He had to be washed by the blood of an animal sacrifice before he was able to step behind the veil of the earthly temple into the Holy of Holies. Even then, he had a rope tied to his ankle in case he should die in the presence of God so that he could be pulled out. Only the chosen high priest was granted permission to enter this inner most holy place. Jesus, on the other hand, has passed through the heavens, the real Holy of Holies. Instead of needing to make sacrifice for Himself, He becomes the Sacrifice for all. He is the one mediator between God and men ( 2 Timothy 2:5 ). Christ’s sacrifice of Himself was infinitely an...

The New Heavens and the New Earth

What a blessed morning I have had basking in the glory of the presence of God! He is kind beyond measure to me. His Word is living and active and speaks into my heart of hearts with a power that cannot be described but must be experienced. He is gracious to let His glory pass before me giving me a sweet reminder that He is the Pearl of great price that is worth my life. I’m in a season in which God is weaving together pieces of His Word to give me a broader perspective of His salvation plan and of His grace. I wish I could repeat this experience at will, but it seems to be something that God brings at times to remind me of how much there is yet to learn about Him. It also serves to strengthen my desire for Christ, which is always welcome! I want to share something with you that God revealed to me through His Word just a few minutes ago. I also hope that this serves as a reminder to me when I am weary that God is infinitely good to me all the time. I’m g...

Beset With Weakness

For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. Hebrews 5:1-3 I just want to unpack one small, but critical, reality from these verses. Contextually, the Hebrews author is comparing the earthly Levitical high priests to Jesus, THE High Priest. While the writer is speaking of high priests, we can take something from this passage for ourselves as well. In verse 1, we see that the high priest is chosen from among men (by God) to act on behalf of his brethren. His role is to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people. In verse 3, we see that he must also offer sacrifice for his own sins. Verse 2 is what stands out to me. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, sinc...

Gospel-Centered Love

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. Psalm 63:3 Isn’t it easy at times to doubt that God actually loves you? Maybe you doubt because it seems too good to be true or maybe you’re like me and doubt because you are proud and don’t think God could ever love a sinner like He claims to love you. Most of my doubts center around a belief that I am too bad and God can’t possibly be for me. The aim of this writing is to provide Scripture to defeat the lies that we far too often believe and move us back under the shadow of God’s wings where we find safety, affirmation, and the love we so desperately desire. Just as most of these Scripture will focus on the Gospel, so must our thoughts be Gospel-centered if we are to slay these doubts and know the love of God more deeply. I won’t do much writing of my own from this point on because God says it better. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that...
